Some releases tell you exactly where they belong. Others make you look twice at the label. Dr Mayembe’s “Mwitina Mwebana Shipeni” is the second kind — a track filed under Acid Jazz in an artist’s catalog otherwise dominated by Gospel .
I came across this song in church last Sunday. Since then, my spirit has been uplifted. There is something about hearing a song in a place of worship that changes how it lands — the room, the voices around you, the moment itself. It was not just the melody that stayed with me. It was the feeling. I have carried that feeling through the week, and it is the reason I am writing about this track now. If you are looking for music that feeds the spirit, this is worth your time.
Dr Mayembe has built a substantial catalog as one of Zambia’s most prolific gospel voices. His discography spans dozens of releases, including worship songs like “Shakalabe Uluse Lwamfumu” (I Will Never Forget the Mercies of God), “Ocheni Ifinshupa” (Burn My Troubles), and “Yesu Empususha” (Jesus My Savior) . His music is rooted in Zambian worship traditions, often sung in local languages, and his delivery carries the sincerity that defines the genre.
“Mwitina Mwebana Shipeni” was released on July 13, 2026, through Dr Mayembe . It arrives in the middle of an extraordinarily productive year for the artist. His Qobuz discography lists eight albums in 2026 alone, including “Nabika Umulopa (Wakwa Yesu Mulifyonse)” in August, “Lesa Chilibwe Chandi (Psalms 18)” in August, and “Nimwe Mumpela (Nshakabulilwe)” in September . This level of output reflects an artist who is constantly creating, constantly ministering through music.
The genre classification is the most notable detail. Most of Dr Mayembe’s catalog is tagged as Gospel, which fits the content of his lyrics and the context of his releases . “Mwitina Mwebana Shipeni” sits under Acid Jazz, a label that does not match the spiritual themes or the traditional worship sound associated with his other work . That discrepancy could mean several things: the tag was applied by the distributor without the artist’s input, the track genuinely explores a different musical register, or the classification is simply a data error. I cannot resolve which from the information available. But hearing it in a church service tells me the spiritual content is real — whatever the streaming platform says.
What I can say is that the title itself reads like a worship declaration. The language is Zambian, and Dr Mayembe’s catalog suggests the content follows the same spiritual path as his gospel releases. The Acid Jazz tag may be an outlier rather than a signal of a stylistic shift. Either way, it is worth noting openly rather than ignoring — transparency about discrepancies is part of writing honestly about music.
Worth listening? Yes, if you follow Dr Mayembe’s worship catalog and want to hear this release. No, if you are looking for a polished Acid Jazz record — the tag may not reflect the actual sound.
